Season of the Crone

Working with the Crone in the Mother Era - part 1 of 3

The Winter season is held by the Cailleach, the old Crone. In the winter of her life the Crone rests in reflection and welcomes death as a friend. In her stillness she whispers stories of life and renewal to the next generation waiting to be birthed in the Spring.

We are sitting in the winter of the Crone, and it feels like the perfect opportunity to share my reflections and observations about the Crones that walk this Earth today, what it means to be Crone, and how we honor the Crone.

I am not a Crone, but I work with those that are Crone.

I am not a Crone, but I hold some Crone Wisdom.

I am not a Crone, but I observe the Crones to learn from them.

Liberation of the Wise Women

We are in a time of reclaiming the words that were once holy, liberating the energies of the Divine Feminine and relearning the ancient ways in which we held our powers.

Witch, Hag, and Crone were among the words used by the patriarchy to demonize the wise, independent, and uncontrollable women. The patriarchy made an example of those that continued in the ways of Witch, Hag, and Crone during the Witch Trials.

Those that weren’t burned, drowned, or stoned choose to hide their wisdom, waiting for the right moment to bring it back into the Light. When they made that choice, it allowed the patriarchy to feel as if their plan worked. That they had successfully wiped out the wisdom women.

Many, many, years passed, the wise women continued their work in secret by the cover of night. Waiting for their time to step out of the shadows.

Growing up I saw images and cartoons that showed Witches, Hags, and Crones as hideous creatures. They were pictured as having boils, warts, green skin, wiry hair, short and plump, or tall and gangly.

If a Witch, Hag, or Crone was shown as beautiful and fair, a story was created that she did terrible spells, like stealing the souls of children, to make herself appear beautiful.

Regardless I always wanted to be a witch. The thought of being a witch stirred something within me that created an unquenchable thirst for truth, connection, and magic.

Little did I know that the rise of the Divine Feminine energy was bubbling, preparing to take back the power the patriarchy stole. It was time for the wise women to step out of the shadows and reclaim their holy names.

Which they did very cleverly. They simply started to use them, owning and claiming the titles of Witch, Hag, and Crone. They started to bring back the stories of wisdom to trusted students. They put those “ugly” words right in our face.

Eras of a Women’s Life

There is still work to be done and truths to be called back to regain all the wisdom we lost after the trials.

As we start to call back the Divine Feminine Wisdom, I’m noticing a pattern in how we are look at the different aspects and roles of a women’s life. We seem to be keeping it very surface level because there’s a lack of understanding in the different eras of a woman’s life.

Throughout the life of a woman, she transforms from Maiden to Mother to Crone.

In ancient times they held ceremonies welcoming a woman into the next era of her life. These ceremonies were held when a woman was the correct age and when her mind was ready. They would honor her and prepare her for the work to be done, as well as the lessons to be learned.

The men also held similar ceremonies that were used to mark next phase of their life.

It’s important to note that these ceremonies where vital to understanding who we are, what we should be learning, and doing in our lives.

We still feel this need to mark the eras of life, but they have been transformed into silly or belittling activities with an elder stating “this makes you a man now” or “now you’re a woman”. They aren’t held in a spiritual capacity and they lack the direction that needs to be taken.

Without meaningful ceremonies we walk into the next eras of our lives either stuck in a previous era or carrying a wounded era with us, preventing us from fully embodying the next era(s).

The simplest way to understand these eras was passed to me by a wise Crone.

A Maiden’s journey is held in the focus of self. Through her focus of self, she learns her sovereignty and her worth. She is self-focused going within, yet she is defined by others. She is defined her peers, loved ones, teachers, and the world, they place her in defined roles to guide her on her journey. Sometimes the defined roles are right, sometimes they are wrong and sometimes the right and wrong weave together to teach the Maiden.

A Mother’s journey is held in the focus of others. She learns how to be in service to others. She carries with her the sovereignty her Maiden and she knows her own worth. She’s able to serve others because of the love that she holds. She guides young Maidens with a watchful eye and learns from the Crones the wisdom of the wise. She is defined by others. Her roles and duties are defined by her husband, her children, her work, and her community.

A Crone’s journey is held in the focus of others. She is in service to all, to people, to creatures, to the Earth and to the Cosmos. She’s able to offer this greater service because of her practices in her Mother Era. She serves other mothers and maidens through her teachings and by allowing them to find out on their own. She is defined by herself. No one places a role on the Crone, that the Crone does not place on herself.

Think of the movie Moana.

Moana (Maiden) is trying to understand her sovereignty. She’s defined by the role of future leader placed on her by her parents and the community. Her parents and the community (even the animal friends) try to get her to let go of her ocean dreams and to focus on being the future leader. While her grandmother defined Moana as an adventurer that would save her people and the land.

Moana’s Mother (Mother) from the looks of it, doesn’t play a grand role in the story. She is shown in service to the community helping where she can. While she raises Moana her life is spent aiding Moana to focus on the role of being future leader. Yet, when it comes time that Moana must leave, her Mother’s knowing understands the call to the ocean is something Moana can no longer ignore, and she helps her pack.

Moana’s Grandmother (Crone). Calls herself the village weirdo. She only does the things that bring her joy, and she marches to her own drum. No one can tell her what to do. Yet, she is still deeply respected. She watches and observes how she can serve others. She not only helps Moana uncover her own Sovereignty but aids in the survival of the community and the land. Her Crone Wisdom understood the call of the ocean, that the land was dying, and that Moana would be the one to save it all. Yet, she remains humble knowing her service isn’t about her, her service is for the good of all.
